About Knox : Student Care : Pastoral Care

Pastoral care is the responsibility of the entire staff.  Policy formulation, where necessary, is led by the Deputy Head in conjunction with the House Masters.  However, policy implementation, follow-up and reporting is the responsibility of each House Master and his assistants.

The well being of each boy is ultimately the responsibility of his class teacher. The class teacher is with his/her class members for the majority of each day and is well aware of all the needs of the boys. However, to assist the class teacher, the Preparatory School also offers a House system and peer support.

House System

All boys are placed in of one of five Houses, each with a House Master and five other staff appointed to assist. It is the House Master's responsibility to assist the classroom teacher and take an active role in the pastoral care of all students in his House, including discipline. The House Master comments on all report cards for students in his/her House.

A key part of the House system are the co-curricular competitions including summer and winter sport, debating and chess. There is also an academic competition based on House points gained in each classroom.  Please go to the Contact Us section for details of the staff assigned to each House group.

We also have 'clan groups' where boys from K-6 meet regularly in small groups to discuss school issues, philosophy and social skills.

Peer Support

The Prep School's peer support program ensures that all boys in Year 6 are given leadership training and then are appointed to a number of vertical age groups. These groups meet regularly throughout the year and complete various activities based on giving the boys an understanding of caring for all boys in the school, no matter what their age.

The School provides access to counsellors where necessary. This is always done in consultation with parents, class teacher, the Special Needs Coordinator and the Headmaster.
