The Knox da Vinci Program
The Knox da Vinci Program exists to capture the interest and talents of the most academically able students. This is achieved through the provision of programming and classes that are designed to enrich, excite and challenge students. Learning is structured so students benefit from an education which establishes a strong grounding in learning and thinking skills and explores the discursive, evaluative and philosophical nature of subjects. The program caters for lateral extension of students, at its core the concept of different work, not more work is the key.
Initial placement into Year 5 is based on student potential and Year 6 placement is based on measured academic performance through the use of the school assessment program for 95% of cases. Initial placement in Year 7 is once again based on student potential and Year 8 placement is based on measured academic performance through the use of the school assessment program for 95% of cases. Years 9 and 10 placement is based on measured academic performance through the use of the school assessment program for 99% of cases.
The curriculum, while being firmly embedded within the current Board of Studies Syllabi, asks students to explore ideas in greater depth. As such, the da Vinci Program is not for every student. This is recognised by the da Vinci Program becoming subject based from Year 8 onwards. Students who perform at the highest academic levels are given the opportunity to participate in the program in their area or areas of greatest strength and interest. For many boys this is the first time they will have experienced any doubt in relation to being able to complete their assignments or work successfully. Feedback from both students and parents has shown that the majority of our boys thrive on these challenges. In Years 11 and 12 opportunities exist for subject acceleration, university study (see below) and extension course study in English, Mathematics, History, languages and Music.
Additional opportunities for da Vinci students include da Vinci Decathlon, acceleration, Board of Studies Distinction Courses and the Macquarie University PHIL137 Course.
Existing parents and students can obtain full details of the da Vinci Program in Docushare on the School’s Scholaris site at Docushare.
