Why a Boys' School?

Curriculum : Assessment

Assessment and evaluation at Knox Grammar Preparatory School is a continuous and systematic process.  A variety of formal and informal tools are employed to ensure an accurate picture of the progress and performance of our boys.  A combination of standardised, curriculum based and informal procedures are employed, the results of which are collated and submitted for review twice a term.  The results comprise the achievement indicators included on semester reports to parents.  An effort rating and anecdotal comments also form a substantial component of the information reported to parents at these times.

The establishment of thorough and comprehensive assessment strategies and documentation of student progress and achievement enables the systematic monitoring of individual development.  Boys commonly experience varying rates of progress and relative strengths and weaknesses impact in varying degrees and at different stages of school.  Accurate individual profiles can indicate student potential and the extent to which this will correlate with performance. Assessing and recording student achievement facilitates the exchange of accurate and standardised information between the Resource Department and class teachers.  As a matter of procedure, collected information and class results form the basis of the information reported to parents at the conclusion of each academic semester.

Aims
The purpose of assessment and evaluation practices at Knox Grammar Preparatory School is to ensure a systematic and sequential approach to monitoring the progress and performance of all boys.  The accurate documentation and interpretation of results facilitates tailored learning experiences, which assist in the realisation of learning potential and development of positive attitudes to learning for all boys in the School.

Implementation
A battery of diagnostic, continuous and cumulative assessment tasks provide regular information as to individual performance and progress.  Standardised tools provide an understanding of the boys' performance relative to state and national norms.  Curriculum-based and standardised tests will form the basis of the student information included in semester reports to parents.  Interim information is available through parent / teacher interview with reference to ongoing class results and student assessment folders where relevant.

External Programs
Knox Prep participates in several external programs to help assess the progress of our boys against a wider chort.  These tests include:

  • Basic Skills tests in English, Mathematics and Primary Writing in Years 3 and 5.
  • Computer skills test in Year 6.
  • The UNSW tests in English, Mathematics and Science in Years 3 to 6.
  • Standardised tests are given for reading and mathematics at the conclusion of each year.
