Co-Curricular : Debating
Contact - Debating
The Prep School has a long history of successful participation in debating. The boys participate in three major competitions during the year which provides many opportunities to participate on a variety of levels. Debating also occurs as part of the classroom curriculum in senior years and particularly in conjunction with studies on parliament. A public speaking competition also occurs for all boys in Years 3-6.
Debating Competitions The debating competitions available to the boys include:
ISDA The ISDA Competition involves 10 to 12 of our most able speakers from Years 5 and 6 in Primary A and B Divisions. It occurs weekly on Friday nights during Terms 1and 2 and includes schools form all over Sydney. Preliminary rounds involve schools on the North Shore and culminate in a round of three finals including the best teams from each of the four Sydney pools.
Trials for ISDA are held in Term 1.
JSHAA The JSHAA competition occurs fortnightly on Friday afternoons during school time in Terms 2 and 3. Once again, Knox Prep competes against schools in our area. It culminates in a Debating Day held at one of the participating schools. This competition is used as a development program for the ISDA teams and includes up to 30 interested boys from Years 5 and 6 throughout the competition.
Inter-House Debating The Inter-House debating competition occurs during Term 4, involving boys from Years 5 and 6. It takes the form of a knock-out compettion of one hour preparation debates. The final is held before a School Assembly for Years 3-6 and is a fabulous showcase of how the boys' skills and confidence have developed throughout the season.
Getting Organised Practice Boys who are selected for ISDA or JSHAA attend practice sessions throughout the term. These are not determined until the competition commences and detailed notes are sent home to parents outlining the requirements of their son.
Transport Most of the Inter-School debates are held on a "home and away" basis. Parents may be asked for assistance with transport and notes requesting this are sent home in advance.
