Chess is very popular at the Preparatory School with a number of ways in which boys can get involved.

Chess Club
The School provides a Chess Club, where boys from all grades K-6 can play each other every recess and lunchtime at the chess tables outside 5BU.  If boys in K-2 are interested in chess, parents are asked to contact the MIC via a note to confirm their participation.

Professional Tuition
Tuition is also provided for boys in Y3-6 throughout Terms 1 and 4 after school on Fridays from 3.20 to 4.30pm.  Boys can be collected earlier if needs be.

This session is held in the Maths Room and is supervised by the MIC and an assistant from the Chess Academy.

It should be noted:

  • This tuition is not provided in Terms 2 and 3 due to competition commitments outlined below
  • Sports' practice takes priority over Chess Club

Competition
Eight chess teams compete in the Upper North Shore Division of the NSW Schools Championship every Friday afternoon in Terms 2 and 3.

The season is concluded with an Inter-House tournament involving the strongest three players from each House.  In addition, there is a competition to decide the Individual Chess Champion of the School.
